CT Urogram (CTU) is the newest non-invasive CT technology to assist you in identifying urinary tract abnormalities and is a replacement for the less sensitive IVP (intravenous pyelogram) and Nephrotogram studies using fast and painless 3D CT imaging.

Common CT Urogram indications include hematuria, renal colic, recurrent UTIs, suspected neoplasm and obstruction. CT Urogram is approved by Medicare and most insurance for the same indications as an abdomen and pelvic CT.

The new Dual-128 scanner at Salem Regional Medical Center Hospital has a unique capability not found in other area CT scanners called Dual Energy Imaging. With two x-ray tubes, the CT scanner can determine the composition of kidney stones which can be useful to separate medical management and lithotripsy.

The examination involves the patient drinking water and receiving non-ionic intravenous contrast. Images are obtained without and with intravenous contrast in multiple phases to provide dynamic imaging of the kidneys. This allows identification of tumors in the kidney, renal collecting systems, ureters, and bladder. Kidney stone composition is also determined.
